Winter of Christian Life: The Generations Consider Difficult Choices
Coming to Adult Forum on _________
In American culture we want to pretend we are young, don’t want any help, and need to feel valued by others up to the end. The cover of Reader’s Digest blasts out “The New Cure for Aging.” Do we really think aging is a disease that can be cured? Are we in serious denial about death? Where is God in all of this?
Each stage of life poses special challenges and offers special gifts. The differences between the various stages allow opportunities for learning, for preparing, and even for humor. Life in an intergenerational Christian community provides numerous occasions for discussing these challenges and opportunities and for growing in Christian love and commitment.
This course is one of four in the series The Seasons of Christian Life that provides occasions for discussing the challenges and opportunities at the various stages of adult life. The other three in the LifeCrossings series by Dick and Judy Reuning are:
* Spring: Understanding the Faith Journey of Younger Adults
* Summer: Choices, Challenges and Celebrations
* Autumn: Finding Meaning and Joy Amid Change and Loss
All of the stories and dramas in the Seasons of Christian Life series are true stories whose places and characters have been disguised but not exaggerated. The stories, Biblical reflections in "Food for the Journey" and helpful information are skillfully woven together and become the basis for the conversations.
Adults of all generations are welcome to join ________________ at _________ to discuss the problems and potentials of the Winter of life, those years prior to death when one’s physical and/or mental abilities have declined to the point where independence is threatened and interaction with others is compromised. This will be a seven-session topic with the following titles for each session: (1) Ready for Winter? (2) “A Time of Heroic Helplessness”, (3) The Care-giver, (4) Ethical Dilemmas at End of Life, (5) Decision Time, (6) The “Right to Die” in America (7) Gifts of the Church Community. Participants will discuss a case study “A Winter Struggle” and follow a family as they make difficult end-of-life decisions; yet in the midst of winter still find joy, love and peace.
All generations are touched by Winter, those experiencing it, those in care-giver roles, family members of all ages, and church friends. Join our inter-generational group in __________ and let’s learn from each other so that we can understand this important phase of life better.
